IPT Oral Tests: Scoring

Scoring the IPT Oral Tests is extremely easy because each item is scored correct or incorrect as it is administered. At the end of each level, simply count the number of incorrect answers and note that number in the scoring box. Then read the instructions that indicate if you should stop testing or continue. Be sure to ask all the questions until you reach the end of the level you are administering. Do not stop in the middle of a level.

Scoring Box

Let’s look at the scoring box above at the end of the first test level, Level B, for the IPT I–Oral English Test. Let’s say we have a student who answered six questions incorrectly in Level B. What does that mean? We stop testing. The student’s score is Level B. What if the student had answered only two questions incorrectly? We would continue testing and move to Level C. The instructions in each scoring box always tell you whether you should continue or stop testing. Once you have determined the student’s score level, check the appropriate box on the front cover of the test booklet for “IPT Score Level.”
