IPT Oral Tests: Scoring

Determining the Student’s Designation and Oral Proficiency Level
To determine a student’s designation and oral proficiency level, use the Designation Chart on the last page of the test booklet. You need to know the student’s grade and IPT score level in order to determine this. Find the correct row for the student’s grade and read the designation and proficiency level in the column heading.

Let’s think back to the sample student who had six errors in Level B. Let's say the student was in second grade. What is this student’s designation? That’s right—the student would be considered Limited English Speaking (LES) and Early Intermediate because she is in second grade and scored a Level B. After you determine the student’s designation (NES, LES, or FES for English; NSS, LSS, or FSS for Spanish) and proficiency level, check the appropriate boxes on the front cover of the test booklet.

Please note that there is a special designation band on the chart for initial identification of kindergarten students when they are assessed in the fall or in the first semester of kindergarten. This band should be used for kindergartners entering school. The band for spring kindergarten should be used to designate kindergartners who are tested in the spring or at the end of the school year. Be sure that you use the correct band when scoring kindergartners.
